The Alternative Sovereign began out of frustration from the endless barrage of “You can’t be goth and conservative/libertarian.” That’s demonstrably false. Founded by Christine (LibbyG), a 37 year old millennial goth from Tennessee who goes by the name “Libertarian Goth” on X, with the intent of providing the alt culture community with music news that doesn’t bow down to the (increasingly authoritarian) political left perspectives. As a millennial, LibbyG was politically left in her “BabyBat” years like most her age at that time, especially during the Bush era, but as the left began to demand conformity of thought, censorship of opposing opinions, and limitations on constitutional freedoms, eventually LibbyG made the conversion to conservatism, then to fully libertarian after Republican President Donald Trump imposed the “Bump Stock Ban.” The only thing that changed for LibbyG was her political ideology and affiliation, not the music, and she’s not the only one with this story. Many in the alternative culture and music scenes have felt alienated from the subcultures we have held dear for most of our lives as the subcultures didn’t change, but the political ideology held by most in the subcultures continued to move further and further left. That’s where The Alternative Sovereign comes in. Often times news and music sites interject their left-leaning politics into their news, and it makes it appear that the entire music and alternative culture scene is a monolith of politically left-leaning thought when that couldn’t be further from the truth. The Alternative Sovereign is non-partisan, albeit libertarian leaning, with the belief that consenting adults should have ultimate freedom of thought, speech, and sovereignty. Most of all: the freedom to enjoy music and culture regardless of political affiliation.
